When I was attending college I had to decide between majoring in accounting, which I was very good at and had a high likely hood of a well paying job, or majoring in marketing which I was extremely interested in but the job prospects were less appealing. I chose marketing, because I realized money is not enough to make me happy. I rather be doing something I love, even if it means earning less money.

I ended up working as an intern in search engine optimization and now currently consult for multiple companies. I am having a blast, getting referrals for more business, and heading toward a happy future in a career I love.

Thanks for asking. I'm fairly happy. Topped out where I am though and ready for a change. Don't think I've found "it" yet but I'm happy to keep trying. It's the journey, not the destination, right?

Congrats. Sometimes until we actually experience those things we dream about doing, we don't actually know if they are THE thing we want or not. That's great that you had the opportunity to experience pastrymaking - just think how much energy you'd have wasted wondering if that path was the one you should have pursued. I do hope you're happier with what you're doing now. Are you?

Back in the 90's I took a leap and became a pastry cook. For years, I had loved baking, was known for it, and took a lot of amateur classes. One morning I went across the street to a fantastic pastry shop and asked to apprentice for free. At the same time I enrolled in a part-time professional pastry program at night. I would work about four hours at the pastry shop, go to my real job and then school at night. It was nuts but I loved it. After about six months of that, I quit my "real" job and went full-time at the shop, taking about a 50% pay cut. It was a physically demanding job but very satisfying and fun.

However, I discovered that I had an enthusiasm for pastry but not really a passion -- I wasn't consumed by it the same way my boss and others in the shop were. After a year of full-time work, I left pastry. But I am SO glad I did it. It was an amazing experience and I can't imagine not having that in my past. Everyone thought I was a bit rash to go into it but I didn't want to be an old woman looking back and always wondering "what if..." I was in my late 30's at the time so it wasn't a very financially wise decision but I knew I had to try.

So that's my story. Funny enough, I don't bake that much anymore, I guess I got it out of my system!
